Coaching Philosophy for Archery and also for Leadership.

In the below video you will hear a little about Level 5 Archer Coach Dee’s Coaching Philosophy.   My filming was not all that great so the beginning  starts in the middle of this part of the presentation.  The below video is from the level 3 archery instructor class held at the Massac State Park in Illinois in June of 2015

Rather than just shooting and shooting with no pressure, Coach Dee makes it fun, and creates an artificial intensity and increased heart rate of a competition during training.

Coach Dee play’s a game with his high performance private students.  They have to meet a certain criteria and if they don’t meet that criteria, then the athlete may be doing some push ups or splitting wood between ends which creates some of that intensity of a competition.

Level 1 Archery Instructor Class at Cape Cod Sea Camps 2015 with Coach Lucy Morris

2015 Cape Cod Sea Camps June 15th - 16th instructor training A

My archery instructor classes consist of more than just learning archery form and safety, they are challenged with team building skills, leadership, problem solving and laughter ( must have some laughter).

In my 2 day level 1 instructor classes the students will have been teamed up the night before to work on varies home work assignments and to come up with a fun and safe archery game.

In the video below a team of students from my instructor class at Cape Cod Sea Camps give a new version of the game Save The Dragon. It’s so much fun as I can tell that they have learned from instructors I have taught at Cape Cod Sea Camps in the past 🙂 :).

I usually teach a version of this game about the 3rd or 4th time I have met with my students.  My regular students will already have learned aiming and string alignment before we do a game that they don’t realize is an aiming game lol so much fun.

Below is another version of the game that my intern is having fun teaching to a group of my students.

Thank you Cape Cod Sea Camps for hosting another year of awesome training at your camp!!

PS In June I trained  a lot of level 1 archery instructors and I video taped all of the games that they created.  I will be compiling the games and posting a game page created by the instructors that I trained in June of 2015.

This balloon has an arrow in it!!

This week I have been teaching a group of boys at the Somersworth Youth Connection summer camp and on this day we were inside because of the rain.

At one point we were shooting at balloons and look at this picture!! This young man wanted to show off to you, what it is like to hit a balloon with an arrow and to show you IT DID NOT POP.

Can you find the stunt double in the picture??

We have fun moments at the instructor training classes that I run during pre- camp when camps are getting ready for the little ones to arrive.

This is a group of Camp Counselors who came from different camps for our archery instructor class at William Lawrence Camp .  We only had 15 students.  Can you find our stunt doubles?

Magnificent sunset, everyone at the camp just ended up on this huge porch to watch it.

Early in the morning on the same porch, I watched this wonderful looking turkey strut his stuff and make a rattle sound as he tried to impress the lady turkeys.  It was much better to watch in person.  I have never seen a turkey fluffed up like that before.   It was almost like he was dancing with a rattle.  Then when he was in the tall grass I could only see the top of of his feathers.  It was fun to watch as I was relaxing and preparing for day two of the  archery instructor class.

If you make the picture bigger you can see a reflection of the targets off of her glasses.

Thank you  Camp William Lawrence for being a great host and providing such beauty with mother nature!!

Why teach archery?

Hi everyone, I’m back.  This month I have been teaching archery instructor classes to camp counselors all over New England. Check out why this camp counselor wants to teach archery.

He is holding a can of coke and showing you that the word on it is dream.  Don’t forget to go for your dreams.

A little archery tip

Do you shoot like a speeding bullet sending off many arrows as fast as possible?  The routine after you shoot each arrow…. Is the routine important?  Click on the below video for Lucy’s cool archery tip.

Have a fantastic day and I appreciate you.

Who says archery is just for kids?

Families who bow together grow together  🙂  .

Just so much fun  🙂  🙂  . We also saw an airplane doing aerobatics during our last class and the kids in the class pointed out a spaceship in the sky.  Yes it was just a jet flying way high, but it was fun and they were not the little kids either.  Lots of laughs and popping of balloons as well as learning new skills hidden in games.

We were just about to start the interview and below is what I saw behind the person who was about to video tape us.  So I asked for my phone back for a moment and I took this picture and then we continued on 🙂 .

To The Women Who Inspire Us, Thank You :).

summer 2009 me and my Mom

It’s mothers day this week… And when I called my Mom a day early, I told her that everyday is mothers day.   Then I started thinking about the women in my life that have inspired me.  Wouldn’t it be great if we called the women that we know, who are an inspiration and just tell her and thank her?  They might not even realize what a difference they have had in your life.

My Mom is a wonderful and courageous woman.  She let me take flying lessons when I was a teenager, crazy uhh?  I had just turned 16 years old and I took my first lesson in this white with green tail sign N1315Q  in a Cessna 150.

Then when I became a pilot my first passenger was my Mom :).  Mom you have guts!! She didn’t tell me then, but she was afraid of flying LOL wow. Thank you Mom for your courage and love 🙂

A couple of years ago I asked my Mom why she let me learn how to fly and why she got into an airplane with me as my first passenger when she was scared of flying.  Her response was the she didn’t want her fears to stop me from doing what I wanted to do.  Talk about a powerful statement.

And my grandmother Celia Houghton (Nana) who was a teacher of teachers, inspired us all to greatness.  She believed that students are people and not just a number and so she taught her students and instilled in our family, that we are all unique, great and wonderful people.  And…. Nana paid for my first couple of flying lessons as a birthday gift. What a great gift for a 16 year old 🙂

First page of my first log book. At that time I could only afford .5 hours of flying lessons at a time as I was working part time as a life guard and water safety instructor to pay for my lessons.

My first log book is a little warn out 🙂

After high school I went on to Daniel Webster College and I received an undergrad in Aviation Management / Flight Operations and earned my Commercial License and Flight Instructor Certification.

The below picture I took while I was in flight school at Daniel Webster College, or  maybe I took that picture at an airport when I was working in Washington DC. I was checking out a few places to do some flying at when I lived in DC.

My grandmother Celia Houghton, who inspired others through the work she did and the innovative programs she created.  🙂  🙂  Love you Nana  🙂 .

Archery Tip: How to think after you miss.

My archery Coach Marcia Wyman told me a story once, about how a high level archer was competing in large tournament with thousands of people watching and she missed the target.  Then this archer was able to consistently hit the 10 after that miss.   Marcia told me this story a few years ago, so maybe she hit the 1 or 2 but it was a big enough error that the crowd reacted.

How do you mentally pick yourself back up after a miss?  Do you beat yourself up? or do you decide to focus on the now, instead of the past?

Marcia, thank you for introducing me to the world of archery  🙂

First Archery Instructor Class of The 2015 Season

Awesome fun time with some great people in this archery instructor class.  We were all ready for hot weather like it was the night before. But no… mother nature turned down the temperature, as we started out it was about 70F and then the temperature dropped.  Everyone had great attitudes and awesome focus.

Students in the archery instructor class talking about the importance of a letdown with a bow, not in life.  But in life it is just how you decide to think about it. Right?

Group selfy, we were cold. Who thought the temperature was going to drop down into the 40sF brrr….  and they did a great job despite the cold and it started to get dark, close to the end of class.

By the time we did the video interviews, it was getting dark out lol.   The practical hands on part of the class was done by the time it got dark out  :).

Thank you Matt at Merrimack Park and Recreation for hosting this class and also participating in the class.  And thank you to all my participates for taking this cool archery instructor class.  Have fun with your summer camp programs!!

Coach Lucy

PS.  One of the participants in this class did archery at a local camp for a few years and his archery instructor at the camp was certified by me.  I can tell that his archery instructor understands the rules and form work, because I could see that this young archer, that was in my instructor class, has good habits and already new the safety rules.
